The ancient temple town Uplistsikhe, translated as the “Fortress of the Lord“, dates back from the 6th c BC and is mentioned in the chronicles of the 1st c AD. It’s located approximately 20 kilometers east of the town Gori. The echoing halls, long meandering corridor-streets, chambers for pagan worship and even the remains of the oldest theatre in Georgia, all carved out in the rocky plateau are waiting for you to be explored.

After excursions in Joseph Stalin's museum and Uplistsikhe, drive back to Tbilisi.

SITES TO VISIT:

Joseph Stalin’s Museum- The museum exhibits re-create surreal and revealing scenes from the life of the dictator and include unique photos, gifts and furniture. The house where Stalin was born is preserved under a stone canopy nearby. 

Uplistsikhe caves - translated as the “Fortress of the Lord“. The history of Uplistsikhe goes back to the 2nd-1st millennium B.C. In antiquity, the city was one of the most important centers of Kartli and in the middle Ages. It stood on an important trade route that linked Byzantium with India and China. In 10th-16th centuries B.C. one of the strongest communities, residing on this territory used the natural caves for dwellings. Later Uplistsikhe became one of the strongest political, cultural, religious and economic centers and the royal residence. The handicrafts made here are of high artistic quality, and today are kept in the State Art Museum of Georgia.

DAY TO DAY ITINERARY

  • DAY 1: TBILISI – GORI – UPLISTSIKHE – BORJOMI – AKHALTSIKHE

    Pick up from Tbilisi hotel. Drive towards South Caucasus. We start the visits from J. Stalin’s house-museumdedicated to the life of the leader of Soviet Union. Museum consists of the house, where Stalin was born and spent the first 4 years of his life, an exposition building where the leader’s personal items are presented and Stalin’s personal train carriage with interior.

    Drive to ancient rock-hewn cave town of Uplistsikhe dating back to 1st millennium BC. The town is identified as one of the oldest settlements in Georgia and is remarkable for the combination of Anatolian and Iranian cultures. The museum includes rock streets and squares, halls, secret tunnels, remains of ancient churches and museum building where valuable items excavated in Uplistikhe are presented.

    Have lunch en-route.

    Next stop is Borjomi – a town famous for its mineral sparkling water. The artesian springs are fed by waters coming from glaciers and it rises to the surface without pumping. Here you can taste Borjomi mineral sparkling water and walk through Borjomi-Kharagauli national park – one of the largest protected areas in Europe, which covers 5300 sq. km. It’s unique because of the ecological and geographical zones, historical sites, and wildlife.

  • DAY 2: AKHALTSIKHE – KHERTVISI – VARDZIA – TSALKA – TBILISI

    After breakfast visit Akhaltsikhe fortress and museum – Rabati. The museum presents major part of the cultural heritage of Javakheti region, such as old manuscripts, archaeological exhibits, ethnographic material, collection of old carpets, rugs, and etc. Rabati also includes a castle, 18th c. Mosque and ruins of Islamic school.

    Continue drive to the south part of the country via Mtkvari river gorge and enjoy the hilly landscape rich of old fortresses. Stop by Khertvisi fortress 9th c.

    Continue to Vardzia – a cave city dating back to 12th-13th cc. Vardzia is carved in the slopes of the Erusheti Mountain, stretches along the 500 meters wide cliff and consists of 19 tiers. Georgian Queen Tamar is credited for establishing a monastery in Vardzia during her reign in the 12th c. which housed 2000 monks. During its rise in the 12th c. the cave city contained 6000 apartments, throne room and a large church with bell tower. Nowadays monks still live in caves.

    Have hot trout barbeque and picnic lunch near the site.

    Drive back to Tbilisi via Tsalka.

  • DAY 1: TBILISI – GORI – UPLISTSIKHE – RIKOTI PASS – KUTAISI

Pick up from Tbilisi hotel and depart to West Georgia via main highway. First visit the J. Stalin’s house-museum located in the town of Gori. The museum presents items belonging to J. Stalin – leader of the Soviet Union. Afterwards drive to Uplistskhe cave town. Uplistsikhe is the first settled area mentioned in manuscripts dating from 2nd millennium BC and translates literally in English as “the fortress of God”. The town was an important point on the trade route linking Byzantium, India and China. Nowadays archaeological excavations uncovered several layers dating from Early Iron Age to the late Middle Ages.

Have lunch near the sight.

Drive to Kutaisi via Rikoti Pass and explore handmade wooden baskets and ceramic staff. Kutaisi is the second largest city of Georgia and based on archaeological sources it was the capital of the Colchis Kingdom in the 2ndmillennium BC. Take a nice walk through Kutaisi old town.

Dinner and overnight in Kutaisi Guesthouse.

  • DAY 2: KUTAISI – GELATI – BAGRATI – TSKALTUBO – SATAPLIA CAVES – TBILISI

    After breakfast visit Kutaisi farmer’s market, where are sold large assortment of locally produced fruit and vegetables, homemade sweets and delicious Imeretian cheese.

    Then drive to Gelati Academy and Monastery complex of 12thc. The complex is included in UNESCO World Heritage sites list. For a long time Gelati Monastery was one of the main cultural and intellectual centers of Georgia. The complex included an Academy, where some of the most renowned Georgian theologians, scientists and philosophers have graduated from.

    Continue to Bagrati Cathedral dating back to 11th c. The site is also included in UNESCO World Heritage sites list. The cathedral is standing on a hill and overlooks the city of Kutaisi. It’s named after the first King of united Georgia – Bagrat the Third.

    Lunch en-route

    Pass through Tskaltubo spa-resort famous for its mineral springs with natural temperature of 33-35 degrees C.  Visit the bathhouse which J. Stalin often visited.

    Drive to Sataplia karst caves and take a walking tour in Sataplia national reserve. The place is famous for containing dinosaur footprints which are conserved on the territory of the museum. Sataplia cave is 900 m. long in total and contains stalactites, and stalagmites. Colorful visual effects and lights enrich the natural beauty of the caves.

    Drive back to Tbilisi.

DAY 1: TBILISI – MTSKHETA – ANANURI – GUDAURI – JVARI PASS – KAZBEGI

Pick up from the hotel and departure from Tbilisi. First stop in Mtskheta – the ancient capital of East Georgia. Sightseeing in Mtskheta town, visit of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral of 11th c. and Jvari monastery of 6th c. – both of them are included in UNESCO world heritage sites.

Continue to Ananuri fortress 14-17th cc. The complex consists of fortifications and residential buildings of Aragvi Dukes. The purpose of the monument was to guard the country from North.

Lunch in Ananuri.

Continue to ski resort of Gudauri. Drive over Jvari (Cross) Pass (2395m). Arrive in the town ofStepantsminda (Kazbegi) the centre of Khevi province. located at 1700 m above sea level.

Dinner and overnight in Stepantsminda guesthouse.

  • DAY 2: KAZBEGI – GERGETI CHURCH– DARIALI GORGE – GWELETI WATERFALLS – SNO VALLEY – TBILISI

    After breakfast at the local guesthouse take a walk (approx. time 2.5 hours) to Gergeti Holy Trinity Church –an important altar of 14th century, located on the slope of Mount Kazbegi. The church facade preserves stone decorations depicting ancient rituals and beliefs.

    If we are lucky with weather, we will see Mount Kazbegi (5047 m. above sea level). According to the legend Amirani – a cult hero and a prototype of Greek Prometheus, punished by Gods was chained on the mountain.

    Walk back to Kazbegi town and have lunch at the local guesthouse.

    Drive to Dariali gorge, an important crossing point of Caucasus range, which was fortified since 150 BC. Take a walk along the river to Gweleti waterfalls, easy upwards trekking (20-25 minutes) and enjoy the views of green valleys and picturesque landscapes.

    Drive to Sno Valley to see the contemporary sculptures of Georgian writers and public figures by Merab Piranishvili.

    In the evening return back to Tbilisi

DAY TO DAY ITINERARY

  • DAY 1: TBILISI – DAVID GAREJA – BODBE – SIGNAGI

    Pickup from the hotel and departure from Tbilisi to Kakheti region.Via Sagarejo drive to David Gareja semi-desert, partially through ground roads. Have excursions to the David Gareja caves and monastery of Lavra6th c. According to the sources, one of thirteen Assyrian fathers, who arrived in Georgia for popularizing Christianity, founded the monastery in 6th c. AD.2-3 hour easy trekking (upward climb - 200 m., max elevation - 875 m.) Picnic lunch near the caves.

    After picnic drive to Bodbe– monastic complex located near the Signagi town. Bodbe monastery was built in 9th c. and was significantly renovated in 17th c. The monastery now functions as one of the major pilgrimage sites in Georgia. The female evangelist St. Nino’s relics rest in Bodbe.

    Afterwards visit Signagi - ancient town also called “City of Love” and encircled by beautiful 18th c. defensive wall. For its romantic location it is called city of love. Enjoy the evening views of High Caucasus Mountains.

    Dinner and overnight in local guesthouse.

  • DAY 2: SIGNAGI – TSINANDALI – TELAVI – GREMI –NAPAREULI –ALAVERDI – IKALTO – SHUAMTA – TBILISI

    After breakfast at the guesthouse drive to Tsinandali and visit Alexander Chavchavadze (Georgian public figure and nobleman) house-museum with decorative garden from 19th c. Here Chavchavadze entertained foreign guests with music, and the finest wines made at Tsinandali winery. Have excursion in house-museum and taste a glass of best Tsinandali cellar wine.

    Drive to Telavi – administrative center of Kakheti and an old royal town. Visit the remains of old capital ofKakheti Kingdom Gremi dating back to 16th-17th cc. Nowadays Church of the Archangel’s and royal citadel survived of what once was a flourishing city. 

    Afterwards visit Twin’s Wine Cellar and Museum in Napareuli. Take an excursion to wine museum, where the wine fermenting process is presented step by step. Have lunch in Twin’s restaurant, which offers traditional Georgian dishes. There is an optional wine-tasting available for an additional fee.

    Continue to Alaverdi monastery of 11th c. The monastery was founded by one of Assyrian monks – Joseph – who arrived from Antioch in 6th c. Before that Alaverdi village was a pagan religious center dedicated to the Moon.

    Afterwards drive to Ikalto monastery and academy dating to 6th and 12threspectively. The monastery was also founded by one of Assyrian monks, while the academy was added later in 12th during the reign of King David the Builder.

    Drive back to Tbilisi and en-route visit Shuamta monastic complex, comprising 2 monasteries Old Shuamtaof 5th - 7th c. and New Shuamta 16th c.

    In the evening arrive in Tbilisi


WINE TOUR

This wine tour city break takes you to Kakheti, the main wine-making region of Georgia.  Kakheti is known as a birthplace of viticulture and winemaking. The burning sun of this region, fertile lands, valleys and hard work of Georgian farmers have developed about 500 varieties of vine in Georgia. Visit 5 wineries located in various villages and towns of Kakheti and taste Kvevri wines (wines made according to Georgian traditional way) and European wines (those made according to European standards of wine-making) white, red & black wines, sweet, semi-sweet, semi dry  and dry.

  • DAY 1: TBILISI – SIGNAGI – VELISTSIKHE – KVARELI – TELAVI

    Pick up from the hotel and departure to Kakheti region. Our first stop is Signagi – a town surrounded by 18th c. city wall with 23 defensive fortifications. Visit local wine cellar to taste elegantly traditional Kvevri wines. Take short walk in Signagi, afterwards drive to Velistsikhe and see local wine cellar and museum of Numisi, the oldest wine cellar in Kakheti, dated back to 16th c.

    Lunch in Numisi with red and white Kvevri wines.

    Continue to Kvareli and visit a wine cellar located in a tunnel dug out of the flank of Caucasus Mountains and taste amazing European wines. The temperature in the Tunnel stays ideally at 12-14 degrees throughout the year. It consists of two main tunnels, which are linked by 13 galleries. The total length of the tunnels is 7.7 km. The wine cellar is also used to store Winery Khareba wines.

    Continue to Telavi – administrative centre of Kakheti. Have dinner in local house with homemade Kvevri wines.

    After breakfast continue exploration of Kakheti. First visit of Telavi farmer’s bazaar where you can buy local fruits, homemade wine and Georgian vodka “Chacha”, cheese and bread, Georgian sweets “Churchkhela” and etc…

    Drive to Tsinandali town and visit the residence of the 19th c. Kakheti nobleman, poet and public figure, Alexander Chavchavadze. Take an excursion in house-museum accompanied with a glass of finest Tsinandali cellar white wine.

    Continue to Gremi Royal Residence and Castle dating back to 16th c. This architectural monument is the only surviving part of once flourishing town of Gremi – the capital of Kakheti Kingdom during 16-17th cc.

    Drive to Napareuli village, where Twin’s Wine Cellar and Museum is located. In front of the wine museum, there is placed a two-storied decorative Kvevri and visitors can walk inside it. The museum shows the process of Georgian traditional wine-making procedure step-by-step.

    Lunch in Twin’s Wine Cellar in a comfortable retro-style restaurant with 5 types of Kvevri wines.

    Drive back to Tbilisi.

DAY TO DAY ITINERARY


  • DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN TBILISI

    Meet at the airport. Transfer to Tbilisi HOTEL FOR overnight.

  • DAY 2: TBILISI CITY TOUR

    In the morning we have a breakfast at the hotel.  Start the full day sightseeing tour from Trinity cathedral (1995-2004), the highest one in Georgia. That’s the place where the Catholicos-Patriarch of all Georgia arranges public baptism every year. Take a nice walk on Sharden street, en-route you can see the small sculpture of Tamada (toast master) and visit of the Caravansary, (the History museum of Georgia) rich of various modern exhibits.  Continue to Sioni cathedral from the 13th c. And Erekle II Street full of nice cafes, bars. Cross the glassBridge of Peace.  Get in the cable car and drive up to Narikala fortress 4th c. Stroll down to the mosque, little canyon and waterfall in Legvtakhevi area.  Continue to Abanotubani, sulfur bath houses. Here you can see the colorful bath (Chreli Abano) Alexander Pushkin’s favorite one. Finish the old city tour with Maidan square.Drive up to the Open Air Museum of Ethnography  which is encompassed with 14 different ethnographic zones: Kartli, Adjara, Imereti, and others. During this tour you’ll visit all the regions mentioned above.

  • DAY 3: TBILISI-GORI-UPLISTSIKHE-KUTAISI

    Have breakfast at the hotel.  Today we explore Kartli and Imereti regions. Drive via Western highway to Goritown, the birthplace of Joseph Stalin. Visit of his house-museum and personal carriage.  Continue towardsUplistsikhe, the oldest cave complex in Georgia, dated back to the 1st millennium B. C. Excursion take about an hour. Afterwards drive to Imereti region Via Rikoti Pass. On the way we make a few stops in Surami village, famous of Nazuki bakeries (sweet bread) and Shrosha village well known of pottery production. Arrive inKutaisi, the administrative centre of Imereti region. The town was the capital of the Western Georgian kingdom. The dinner will be served at the hotel. Take an easy evening walk to Bagrati 11th c. cathedral located nearby.

  • DAY 4: FULL DAY KUTAISI CITY TOUR

    After breakfast at the hotel we start a full day Kutaisi city tour from the important religious, historical and cultural area, Gelati Monastery and academy complex. The complex compounds of one central cathedral, a few little churches, academy building, tomb of the great king of Georgia, David the Builder, the founder of this valuable cultural site which nowadays is included in UNESCO world heritage list.  Nearby the Gelaty complex there is located Motsameta (for Martyrs) a little quiet monastic complex surrounded with green and rocky mountains. Continue drive to Tskaltubo to visit Prometheus Grotto. 1200 meters long Karst cave with 5 different shaped halls rich of stalactites, stalagmites and other Karst figures formed millions of years ago. The place is interesting not only for its beauty, it also has medical prescript.  Drive back to Kutaisi and take stroll in the city centre.

  • DAY 5: KUTAISI-BATUMI

    After breakfast at the hotel drive towards Black Sea. Before arrival in Batumi city stop en-route to visit Batumi Botanical Garden.  One of the largest botanical gardens in the former Soviet Union, stretched on 111 hectare and consisting of nine floristic sectors. The garden collection comprises 2037 taxonomic units of ligneous plants, including 104 of Caucasian origin. Continue to the ancient Gonio fortress that was well-fortified Roman city within Colchis 2nd century AD. It’s believed that the apostle of Jesus Christ Matthias is buried underneath the Gonio fortress. Take an evening walk in old and new boulevards of Batumi city.

  • DAY 6: BATUMI

    Have breakfast at the hotel. Enjoy the leisure time at the Black sea coast. There is very pleasant opportunity to visit Batumi dolphinarium and see the new interactive show. The show includes  dolphin dances, playing with rings and balls, balancing on the tails, unforgettable Foot Push and many other new and old stunning moments.

  • DAY 7: BATUMI- MTSKHETA-TBILISI

    After breakfast at the hotel drive back to Tbilisi. On the way we stop to explore the ancient city of Mtskheta lying at the joining point of the rivers Mtkvari and Aragvi. The former capital of Georgia between the 4th century B.C. - 5th A.D; all the city is included in the UNESCO world heritage. Mtskheta is one of the holiest places in Georgia as here is kept the Robe of Jesus Christ underneath the Svetitskhoveli cathedral 11th c. Continue to the Jvari monastery 6th c. standing remotely on a hill and overlooking all the city. Evening arrival in Tbilisi.

  • DAY 1: WELCOME TO GEORGIA

    Arrival in Tbilisi Airport. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight in Tbilisi.

  • DAY 2: TBILISI FULL DAY CITY TOUR

    Breakfast at the hotel. Meet the guide in the hotel lobby. Start Tbilisi City Tour: visit all the main attractions of the city. Start from the Holy Trinity Cathedral (“Sameba”) built in 21st c. and being the main Christian Orthodox cathedral in Georgia. Continue to Metekhi Church of 13th c. located by the bank of Mtkvari river. Ride up toNarikala Fortress by aerial cable car. Narikala fortress dates back to 4th century AD, it has a superb location with magnificent panoramic views over the Tbilisi city. Stroll down to Legvtakhevi (translated literally as “Fig Ravine”) – a beautiful place with waterfall, blooming plants and a small river. Take a walk in park near Sulfur bathhouses, well-known for their healing powers are located nearby, Shardeni street and its neighborhoodand Meidan square with its outdoor cafes, galleries and souvenir shops. Cross the Bridge of Peace – a modern glass bridge in high-tech style. Free time on Rustaveli Avenue, where you can buy the souvenirs and handicraft.

  • DAY 3: TBILISI-MTSKHETA-ANANURI-GUDAURI

    Have breakfast at the HOTEL AND drive to Mtskheta - ancient capital of Georgia to view UNESCO World Heritage Sites:

    Jvari monastery - According to traditional sources, one of the most venerated saints of Georgian Orthodox Church stayed on the site of Jvari to pray and erected a wooden cross on Mtskheta’s highest hill, where small church was built. The present church dates back to 6th century BC and is a representative of the tetraconch architectural type that was popular not only in Georgia but also in Byzantine world.

    Svetitskhoveli cathedral 11th c. – it is known as the burial site of Christ’s mantle and has long been one of the most sacred places for Georgians. The interior walls of the cathedral are painted with frescoes, most of which have not survived in their original state. The stonework in the church depicts carved grapes reflecting Georgia’s wine-making traditions.

    Continue our way to Ananuri Architectural Complex 16-17th cc. The complex comprises churches, fortification and residential buildings of Aragvi Dukes – once ruling the area.

    Arrival in ski resort Gudauri at the elevation of 2196 m. above sea level.

  • DAY 4: GUDAURI-KAZBEGI-GUDAURI

    Breakfast at the hotel. Full day exploration of high Caucasus mountains; The hiest point on the way is 2395 m above Sea level on the Cross Pass, where we can make several stops to taste mineral water, observe snowy peaks of beautiful mountains and waterfalls.  Visit top of the Mount Gergeti and Holy Trinity Church 14th c.

    -located above Stephantsminda  and under the magnificent peak Kazbegi glacier 5033m.

    Overnight in Gudauri.

  • DAY 5: GUDAURI-GORI-UPLISTSIKHE-KUTAISI

    Breakfast at the hotel.  Drive to Gori - a small city where Stalin was born. We stop by his house-museum(optional excursion in the museum costs of 5 EUR). Next stop in ancient cave town Uplistsikhe (12-15 km away from Gori)-carved in rocks from 1st millennium BC. Uplistsikhe contains structures from Early Iron Age to Late Middle Ages.

    Continue to the western Georgia to the second largest city in Georgia-Kutaisi. We can make several stops on our way: there are pottery markets, farmers selling baskets, honey, mushrooms and fruits. Stroll in the local fruit market in Kutaisi; 

    Overnight in Kutaisi.

  • DAY 6: KUTAISI TOUR

    Breakfast. Visit two UNESCO world heritage sites in Kutaisi: Bagrati cathedral 11th c., located in central part of the city on the top of the hill and Gelati Academy 12th c., with beautiful mosaics inside. 

    Next, travel to Sataplia Natural reserve known for containing dinosaur footprints and caves with stalactites and stalagmites of true beauty. (Optional visit to Prometeus Caves located nearby).  Overnight in Kutaisi.

  • DAY 7: KUTAISI-TBILISI

    Breakfast at the hotel.  Drive to Tbilisi. Free time for shopping souvenirs and gifts. You may visit Tbilisi Mall -shopping mallor Dry Bridge Flea Market & Aghmashenebeli Avenue.

DAY TO DAY ITINERARY


  • DAY 1: TBILISI – ZUGDIDI – MESTIA

    Pick up from the hotel in Tbilisi and departure to Svaneti. Way to Svaneti is long, so we will make a few stops on our way. Arrive in Zugdidi – administrative center of Samegrelo region. Visit Dadiani Palace History and Architectural Museum – the former residence of Mingrelian Kings and Queens. The first exhibition here was prepared by the Prince of Samegrelo, David Dadiani and presented archaeological findings from the ancient city of Nokalakevi. The museum now includes palaces of Princess of Samegrelo, Ekaterine Dadiani and Prince of Samegrelo, Niko Dadiani, court church, and the botanical garden.

    Have lunch on the way.

    After Samegrelo, we start driving up to the Caucasus Mountains. On our way we will stop near Enguri Dam, currently being world’s second largest dam – 271.5 m in height.

    In the evening arrive to Mestia.

    Dinner and overnight in Mestia guesthouse.

  • DAY 2: MESTIA – USHGULI – MESTIA

    Breakfast at the guesthouse.Today we’ll explore Upper Svaneti and drive with 4x4 vehicles to Ushguli village– the highest continually inhabited places in Europe. The whole village with its fortifications is included inUNESCO World Heritage Sites. The way to Ushguli is off-road but very picturesque. On our way, we’ll visit villages: Ipari and Kala to see the churches rich of murals and frescos.

    Have picnic lunch en-route.

    Stop by Lamaria church in Ushguli - a sacred place for locals. Take a walk towards Shkhara glacier – the highest peak in Georgia (5068 m).

    In the evening return back to Mestia.

    Dinner and overnight in Mestia guesthouse.

  • DAY 3: MESTIA AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

    Breakfast at the guesthouse. Visit Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography, which houses old Georgian manuscripts, ethnographic and archaeological items, Georgian Orthodox icons painted in Svanetian style, etc.

    Walk up to the tower-museum of Margiani (12th c.) to see how the locals were living. Have lunch in one of the local restaurants.

    After lunch visit villages: Latali and Lemjeri located near Mestia town containing churches decorated with medieval frescos and murals.

    Dinner and overnight in Mestia guesthouse.

  • DAY 4: MESTIA – ZUGDIDI – TBILISI

    Breakfast at the guesthouse. Drive back to Tbilisi and visit Zugdidi farmer’s market on the way, where local ecologically clean fruit, vegetables and homemade (Sulguni) cheese and sweets are sold. Have lunch en-route.

    Evening arrival in Tbilisi.
